Wright Library’s 80th Anniversary

On February 14th, 1939, Wright Memorial Library opened its doors in Oakwood. In 1913, the library started in the home of a local family and in 1916 a resolution was passed to establish a public library and the library’s location moved around a few times until a bond issue was passed to build a new building on Far Hills, on the site of the Katharine Wright Park.

On the opening night of February 14th, 1939, the lights went out, which required the crowd to tour their new library by candlelight. To celebrate 80 years of service to the community and commemorate the opening night, Wright Library held a candlelight celebration with historical items on display and a telling of the story of opening night.

Gem City Tonight with Andrew Mitakides

Dayton is getting late night! Premiering Saturday, February 9, at 8 pm, Gem City Tonight will highlight the positive aspects of Dayton and show what a great city we are in a Late Night Show format! The lineup for the first episode is:

Dayton Unknown was lucky enough to meet with Andrew and talk with him about his show and learn more about him. Andrew was born and raised in the Dayton area, and spent ten years outside of Dayton working in voice acting, Shakespearean theater, musicals, comedies, and as a Golf Pro. He returned to Dayton at the end of 2015, with his wife Alexis. Currently, Andrew is a firefighter, Suicide Awareness Activist, Voice-Over Actor, Emcee, Ghostbuster, and now we can add Late Night Talk Show Host!

Dayton’s UFO Sighting/Hoax

A cell phone video showing what appears to be a blue flying object hovering over Wright Patterson Air Force Base went viral in May 2016.

The video, supposedly captured by an unidentified woman, was shown on Fox News and other news circuits around the world. It showed a blue object flying in and out of sight behind a cloud, appearing to “move with the clouds” as the woman in the video stated.

Experts ranging from a Dayton Astrophysicist to a UFO Investigator from Cleveland have debunked the video, presuming that the website promoting the video, Secureteam 10 may have been getting paid for advertising every time they showed the video. The website did not release the source of the video, the identity of the couple they claimed filmed the video, or any other information.

A spokesperson from WPAFB denied any connection to the video or any activities related to it.

BCN Holiday Bazaar

We went to the Holiday Bazaar at the Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene last weekend and got to enjoy all the crafts and goodies.

A few of our favorite vendors were:

  • Honor Flight RVC – Incredible wooden pieces crafted to benefit the Honor Flight RV Convoy program that offers an alternate method of traveling to Washington, D.C. for WWII, Korean War and Vietnam veterans who choose not to fly.
  • KenKare Jewelry & Crafts – beautiful and unique handcrafted earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more made by a mother-daughter team.
  • Singapore Seahorse – beautiful jewelry made using ancient coins from around the world.
  • Hook & Needle Creations – so many bags and totes of all sizes and with prints to fit everyone’s taste – fandoms, florals, geometric, paisley, etc..
  • Paper Dreams by Terry – so many amazing paper goods such as gift card envelopes, gift boxes, candy bar sleeves, and cute magnets made out of Scrabble tiles!

The BCN Holiday Bazaar is Tomorrow!

After attending the Gem City Made craft show at the Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene back in May, everyone told us that if we enjoyed that craft show, then we definitely needed to attend the annual Holiday Bazaar at the church in the fall. Since then, we’ve been looking forward to it!

The Holiday Bazaar was founded in 1992, and is one of the community’s largest craft shows with gifts, homemade treats, and handmade crafts, and admission is free!

Jeff P. Schmitt, 1954-2018

For many years, Jeff Schmitt has been a local celebrity. Although we never met him in person, we did briefly meet his son Jay, who worked at Sam Goody at the mall in 2003. Through meeting Jay and living in the Dayton area, it felt as if we knew Jeff Schmitt in a small way.

Recently, Jeff Schmitt passed away (his obituary). While at lunch, he suffered a heart attack that eventually led to his passing. Jeff had suffered some health issues in recent years, including needing a new kidney, which he received from his son Jay.
