McCullough also wrote many other historical books, such as The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West, The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, 1776, John Adams, The Johnstown Flood: The Incredible Story Behind One of the Most Devastating Disasters America Has Ever Known, and Truman.
During his writing career, McCullough has received numerous awards, including a Pulitzer each for his biographies on Truman and John Adams. Those biographies were made into a film and an HBO miniseries. Other accolades include:
- National Book Award in 1982, 1972, and 1977
- Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006
- Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award in 1995
- Francis Parkman Prize in 1978
- American Compass Best Book in 2005
- National Aviation Hall of Fame Combs Gates Award in 2016
McCullough is survived by his five children and preceded in death by his beloved Rosalee, who passed in June 2022.
